Webinars for Wise Nonprofits: Safeguarding Client Information - Understanding HIPAA

Nonprofits addressing social determinants of health often collect or have access to sensitive health information as part of their critical work assisting individual clients.  This webinar will focus on the basics of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and its related regulations and key compliance obligations.  Answers to the following questions will be discussed: Is my organization a "covered entity" or a "business associate" under HIPAA?  Under what circumstances is my organization permitted to share protected health information with "business associates" or other partners? As a multi-service organization, how do we separate obligations of our "non-covered" programs?  What are the consequences of non-compliance with the HIPAA regulations?

Please note that the format of this webinar is a pre-recorded webinar previously presented by Lawyers Alliance in 2019, followed by a live session providing relevant updates and opportunity for a Q&A with Mr. Cohen and Mr. Madden.

Learning Objective: Participants will gain an understanding of the key requirements imposed by HIPAA and best practices for compliance.

For Board members, senior management, and human resources professionals at nonprofits addressing social determinants of health.

Presenters: Roger A. Cohen (Partner, Goodwin Procter LLP), Jason S. Madden (Associate, Proskauer Rose LLP) and Bee-Seon Keum (Staff Attorney, Lawyers Alliance for New York)
