Charitable Fundraising: Keeping it Legal

Charities seeking to attract and retain donors to support their programs operate must operate within a legal framework that offers a number of challenges and opportunities.  Community-based and other nonprofits are under pressure to diversify their funding sources to a wide range of funders, including private foundations, corporations, government and individual funders.  Expanded ways of fundraising, including online communications and special events, have opened up innovative avenues to support fundraising efforts.  This in-person workshop will provide an overview of the federal and state laws that apply to nonprofits fundraising in New York, including documentation and disclosure rules imposed by the Internal Revenue Code, state charities registration and reporting, the use of volunteer and paid fundraisers, and steps to avoid deceptive solicitation.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to recognize, and adhere to, fundraising laws and regulations so as to better support their organizations’ fundraising activities.
