Executive Director Sean Delany to Retire

Sean Delany will retire from Lawyers Alliance for New York later this year, after 20 years as Executive Director. Lawyers Alliance's Board of Directors has named Elizabeth M. Guggenheimer, long-time Deputy Executive Director and former Legal Director, to succeed Mr. Delany as Executive Director.

Under Mr. Delany's leadership, Lawyers Alliance for New York has experienced robust growth, from a $1.2 million annual budget to a $3.3 million annual budget. During that period, the number of legal projects handled by Lawyers Alliance's staff and volunteers increased from approximately 560 to more than 1,300, and the number of volunteers grew from approximately 700 to more than 1,900. During his tenure, Lawyers Alliance launched a nonprofit advocacy initiative, cultivated a national network of business law pro bono providers now known as Exponentum (TM) in 15 locations around the United States, and developed other special legal and educational services designed to meet the evolving legal needs of the nonprofit sector. Mr. Delany also spearheaded an outcomes measurement system to capture the impact of Lawyers Alliance's legal services on our nonprofit clients.
Before becoming Executive Director in 1999, Mr. Delany was Legal Director at Lawyers Alliance. Prior to coming to Lawyers Alliance, he was the Assistant Attorney General in Charge of the Charities Bureau of the New York State Attorney General's Office.
Lawyers Alliance's 50th Anniversary Business Law & Leadership Gala, to be held June 4, 2019 at Ziegfeld Ballroom, will recognize Mr. Delany's dedicated service to the nonprofit sector. The event will also honor the civic-minded and distinguished leadership of John J. Suydam, Senior Partner and Chief Legal Officer, Apollo Global Management, LLC, and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP's longstanding pro bono commitment to Lawyers Alliance and our nonprofit clients.
