Opportunities for Corporate Counsel

Why Pro Bono?

Our growing pool of in-house counsel volunteers reinforces that pro bono is not for law firms only. Our volunteers report that partnering with Lawyers Alliance:

  • supports team building, including across cities, office locations, and practice areas
  • provides opportunities for affinity groups and mentors/mentees to work together on a meaningful project
  • complements overall corporate social responsibility goals for their offices
  • allows attorneys to expand their skillset and expertise to the nonprofit sector
  • enables them to learn more about communities in need in New York City and develop relationships with nonprofits that are making a difference

Tell us about your skills, interests, and schedule. Call us or complete a brief on-line introduction form to join our volunteer network.

Individual Pro Bono Matters

Attorneys represent nonprofits on a specific legal matter, such as contract negotiation, incorporation and tax exemption, review of financing or structuring documents, corporate governance upgrade, or advice about an employment law issue. These matters are generally limited in time commitment and selected based on individual attorneys’ interests and skills. An experienced attorney from our office co-counsels on every matter.

A list of our available cases is circulated every two weeks. Please e-mail our Pro Bono Coordinator to be added to the distribution list.

Virtual Clinics
Lawyers Alliance convenes Corporate Counsel Pro Bono Clinics where individual attorneys from a corporate legal department volunteer to assist a nonprofit organization on a limited scope basis. Currently, Lawyers Alliance is offering both in-person and virtual legal clinics to meet the needs of nonprofits and volunteer attorneys. Clinics begin with a live volunteer orientation and training session to "meet” our staff and learn about available resources.  Following these brief sessions, pro bono attorneys provide one to three hours of legal consultation by video or phone.  CLE may be available for participating New York licensed attorneys.  For information about upcoming clinic opportunities, please contact Program and Strategy Director Laren Spirer.

Trainings for Nonprofits
Corporate counsel also can work with Lawyers Alliance staff attorneys to co-teach a training for nonprofit managers.  A list of our upcoming trainings is available here. If any of these topics are of interest to your attorneys, we would be happy to discuss the process of partnering with our staff attorney(s) or a law firm to provide one of these trainings.
