Intellectual Property Basics for Nonprofits

This in-person workshop will review general concepts of intellectual property law, including copyrights and trademark law. It will discuss scenarios that nonprofits often face, including whether to trademark the organization’s name, how to protect curriculums and other documents created by or for the organization, and what consents the organization should obtain before using a photograph of a program participant.

Learning Objectives: Participants will learn the basics of intellectual property law most relevant to nonprofits, and will gain an understanding of what steps they may need to take to protect the intellectual property of their organization.

Presenter: Lee Riffaterre had a 32 year career in the Legal Department of The New York Times Company. When she retired in 2022, Lee was Vice President and Assistant General Counsel, in charge of the Department's Intellectual Property/General Business Contracts team. Lee is currently working on a variety of matters for The Times's Legal Department in a consulting role. Lee is a graduate of Columbia Law School and Barnard College. She currently serves on the Board of En Garde Arts, a theater company based in New York City.
