CLE Accredited Live Webinar (nontransitional and not acceptable for newly admitted attorneys):  Effective Board Service: Serving on a Board When a Nonprofit Organization is Facing Financial Strains

Monday, January 29, 2024, 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Lawyers are often called upon or might be eager to share their valuable time and corporate, legal, and personal experience by serving on a nonprofit Board. Board service can be a fulfilling way to use your skills and perspective to support mission-driven organizations and causes that you support. In this CLE, we will cover how you can be most effective as a Board member, particularly for an organization that may be coping with financial strains. In these kinds of challenging circumstances, the staff may look to you or your colleagues to provide legal or other advice to the organization. We will cover how to lend your legal expertise without crossing the line and serving as an attorney (rather than a Board member) for the organization.  We will also cover the key aspects of effective Board service and the responsibilities that come with serving on a Board or a Board committee. You will learn the difference between committees of the Board and committees of the corporation and how each can be used to support an organization that is facing financial challenges.

Presenters: Hedwig O'Hara, Legal Director, and Ciarra Chavarria, Senior Staff Attorney
